Visitor Numbers Do Not Bring Business

When you allocate budget to an ad, the real question is not how many people browsed the site but how many contacted you. These actions are called conversions: a form submission, a phone call, a WhatsApp message or a quote request. Marketing without conversion measurement is spending budget without knowing which source works.

1. First Answer “What Is a Conversion?”

Every business's conversion is different. For a clinic it is an appointment request, for a water-treatment company a free survey form, for a software company a demo request. Before setting up measurement, write down at most three actions that carry value for you. More makes the report unreadable.

2. Thank-You Page: The Simplest, Most Reliable Method

When the form is sent successfully, redirect the visitor to a separate “thank you” page. Count a view of this page as the conversion in your analytics tool. That way you count a genuinely completed submission, not just “button pressed”. The page should be closed to search engines (noindex), and someone typing the address directly should not generate a conversion.

3. Name the Source with UTM Tags

Adding utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to a link tells the analytics tool which campaign the visitor came from. If you use separate tags for an email newsletter, a social post and a Google ad, they are not all mixed up as “direct traffic”. Be consistent: even a case difference splits the same source into two rows. Keep your tags in a spreadsheet.

4. Events and Key Events in GA4

Google Analytics 4 measures everything as events. A thank-you page view, a click on a phone link or a form submission can each be an event; mark those that matter to you as “key events”. Reports then show directly which source brought key events.

5. Do Not Forget Phone and WhatsApp Clicks

A significant share of mobile visitors call or message directly instead of filling in a form. Record clicks on phone and WhatsApp links as events too; otherwise a valuable portion stays outside the measurement.

6. Consent and Privacy

For analytics cookies and similar technologies you need to offer visitors a cookie choice and keep your privacy notice current. Clarify with your legal adviser which tools collect which data under data-protection law. Not sending personal data to the analytics tool is the safest starting point when setting up measurement.

7. Interpret the Numbers, Then Decide

Dividing the conversions per source by the budget spent on that source gives cost per conversion. With small numbers, do not decide from a single week; wait for a few weeks to accumulate and change variables one at a time.

Setting up and reporting measurement is part of our digital marketing work; technical setup such as thank-you pages and event tags we do together on the web development side.
